The Tigers took home five event wins in the tri-team meet Saturday
Ames, Iowa — Mizzou Track and Field finished the weekend on a high note, winning multiple events at the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational Saturday in Ames, Iowa. The team battled against Iowa State and Drake, bringing home five victories.
The split squad meet was the second for the Tigers in two days, with the other half of the team competing in Fayetteville, Ark., the day prior.
Notable Finishes
Junior Jayson Ashford (Fairview Heights, Ill.) continued his dominance in the men's 60m dash, winning the event for the second week in a row with a time of 7.10. He was joined by redshirt senior Karina Liz (Aurora, Ill.), who won the women's 800m for the second week in a row as well, this time with a 2:13.00 mark.
Joining the veterans for the first time in her career was freshman McKenna Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.), who took home the women's mile title at 5:22.01. The event was her first race since the SEC Cross Country Championships in October 2020 where she was named to the All-SEC Freshman team.
Sophomore Jonathan Schmidt (Dresden, Germany) rounded out the individual winners for the Tigers on Saturday, taking the crown in the men's mile at 4:21.98, while the Mizzou women won the 4x400m with a 3:58.14 time.
In addition to the wins, senior Chris Conrad (O'Fallon, Ill.) cemented himself in the program record books, running the fifth fastest time in the men's 800m in program history. The 1:48.45 mark set a new personal record and puts him in the top-10 in the country for the event so far this season.
Quotables
Associate head coach Natasha Brown on the sprints squad's performance: "Today was definitely challenging. We had some first meet kinks to work through for a few athletes, but I am encouraged by their performances. We'll take the next few weeks to really drill down in the training in preparation for better results in February."
Assistant coach Marc Burns on the distance squad's performance: "This was the meet to be at for the men's 800m this weekend. Thanks to Iowa State for setting up the race and Chris really took advantage of the opportunity. The leader went through in 51 high and Chris tucked in and came through in 52.1. The third 200m was relaxed and he went through 600m in 1:20.5 and then closed hard. His time ranks No. 4 in the country after this weekend and is 5th on the Mizzou all-time list. Our top-10 list in the 800m is as good as any program in the country. Johnny closed in 2:00 for his last 800m in the mile after a relaxed first 800m. It was good to see him get the win. Overall it was a solid day for the distance crew as we head into two important training weeks."
