Sophomore golfer earns distinction for second-straight year
University of Missouri sophomore women's golfer Julia Bower (Columbia, Mo.) has been selected to the 2019-20 SEC Community Service Team, as announced by the league office. This marks the second-straight year that Bower has earned the distinction, and the award honors her numerous efforts to give back to the Columbia community, as well as other philanthropic leadership efforts she partakes in during the year.
Bower, who cracked the starting lineup for the first time this season, made five starts for the Tigers before the spring season was canceled due to the pandemic conditions. Prior to the shutdown, Bower averaged 78.93 strokes per round on the season in 14 rounds. In the fall, the Rock Bridge High School product helped the Tigers win their sixth-straight Johnie Imes Invitational when she finished a career-best 35th individually with rounds of 75-76-76 at The Club at Old Hawthorne. Her three-day total of 227 tied her career best as a Tiger.
Bower was cited for her exemplary work in the community by the league for the second-straight year, thanks to her various efforts. In January, she took a mission trip with Disciples on Campus that assisted food banks, homeless shelters and nursing homes. Locally, she has also given her time off the course by volunteering at the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri to assist with food prep, shile she also has visited a local soup kitchen to help serve food to those in need of warm meals. Other efforts Bower has undertaken are volunteering with Mobility Worldwide to gather and send clothes around the world to those in need, while also mentoring aspiring young golfers as part of the Columbia Golf Foundation camps.
An outstanding student who carries a 3.77 grade point average in journalism (with a business minor), Bower was selected to the 2019 SEC Academic Honor Roll, and will likely be part of that team for a second year, when the league releases that list later this summer.
