Mizzou Softball 5-0 Through the First Weekend

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Mizzou Softball closed out its opening weekend with a 5-1 against Louisville, Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Tigers finish the weekend with a 5-0 record at the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic – the first time Mizzou has been perfect through the opening weekend since 2016.
Turning Point
Mizzou took the lead in the second inning on a bunt single from freshman Megan Moll. With Hannah McGivern on Emma Raabe on first, Moll laid down a bunt just past the circle. She made it safely to first, with McGivern having more than enough time to cross home.
Raabe was thrown out trying to push the play to third, but Moll advanced to second base on the throw.
Moll would reach home on a single up the right side from Brooke Wilmes for the deciding run.
Top Tigers
- Kimberly Wert hit a double to the fence that nearly cleared the yard in the third inning. She scored two batters later after Kendyll Bailey reached on an error by the second baseman.
- Megan Schumacher struck out five batters in 5.0 innings to get her first collegiate victory. The freshman finishes the weekend with 13 strikeouts.
Quotable
- "Today was a great team effort all the way around," said head coach Larissa Anderson. "I'm very impressed with our pitching staff and our defense. It's always an adjustment being outside on dirt to open a season, and we're playing as if we've been on dirt for a month now. We're getting solid offensive performances all the way through the lineup – every game someone different is stepping up, which is what we need to continue to do to be successful."
- "I'm so happy and proud that everyone can see how their hard work and dedication is paying off this season."
Notes
- Mizzou opened the season perfect through the opening weekend for the first time since 2016, and the fifth time since 1999.
- It's the first time Mizzou has opened the year 5-0 with at least one of those wins coming against a ranked team since 2013. That season the Tigers defeated No. 24 Fresno State in Santa Barbara.
- The Tigers are the only team to depart Clearwater, Fla., with a perfect 5-0 record.
- Megan Moll got her first career hit and first career run.
- Mizzou had five different pitchers pick up a win on the weekend.
- Four of Mizzou's wins came against teams appearing in either of the two major polls, with one coming against No. 8/7 Minnesota.
Up Next
Mizzou will return to Clearwater, Fla., next weekend for the ESPN St. Pete/Clearwater Classic. The Tigers will again face a field of ranked teams, Feb. 13-16.
