COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Track & Field recorded four new program top-10 marks and logged 20 personal-best performances during the Mizzou Open on Friday afternoon at the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse in Columbia, Mo. The Tigers dominated field events on Friday as Mizzou claimed wins in the men's long jump, shot put and weight throw as well as the women's triple jump, high jump, weight throw and shot put.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Redshirt senior Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.) moved up to fourth place in program history by clearing 1.81m (5-11.25) in the women's high jump. Roman added one and a half inches to her previous personal-best and now sits in eighth place in the NCAA in the event this season.
Entering the meet with the fourth-best mark in program history, Sophomore Arianna Fisher (San Jose, Calif.) climbed to number two all-time by winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.99m (42-7.5). Freshman Euphenie Andre (Dover Plains, N.Y.) finished second in the event behind Fisher and moved from fifth to fourth-place all-time in the triple jump. Andre recorded a mark of 12.65m (41-6).
Junior Jazmyn Shumaker (Cedar Hill, Texas) cruised to a personal best time of 7.70 in the qualifying round of the women's 60m dash. The time ranks seventh in program history and was 0.04 seconds faster than her previous best. On the men's side of the Mizzou sprints squad, redshirt sophomore Jayson Ashford (Fairview Heights, Ill.) completed another successful meet by logging victories in the 60m dash and the 200m dash.
In the weight throw, Mizzou earned victories on both sides as redshirt senior Patrick Kunza (Wentzville, Mo.) won with a mark of 18.49m (60-8). Meanwhile, redshirt senior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) earned her fourth weight throw title of the season by posting a mark of 21.46m (70-5), a season-best. The Tigers also logged wins on both sides of the shot put as redshirt freshman Mitch Weber (Saint Clair, Min.) posted a distance of 16.44m (53-11.25) and redshirt junior Emily Stauffer (Reinholds, Penn.) won with a personal-best mark of 15.78m (51-9.25).
QUOTEABLES
Head Coach Brett Halter… "It was a terrific showing for the parts of the program that got on the track this weekend. It was another weekend that we stepped up and got better. The message is step in and step up and our athletes are doing that. They're trusting the process. It's fun to watch. When so many good things happen it's hard to pinpoint them all."
On Karissa Roman and others finding their groove… "The only thing you can do is control your thoughts and that's what (Karissa) has done. She knew she was in a great spot heading into the holiday from a technical aspect. It's kind of like swinging a golf club, you put it down for awhile and you're maybe not as sharp and then you have to ease back into it. We're always about how you have to get February, you have to get through those early meets. Now we're seeing people get their groove back."
UP NEXT
After hosting the Mizzou Open, the Tigers get back on the road next weekend to head to the Iowa State Classic and the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas. The Tigers will send a number of distance runners to Iowa State while sending a portion of the rest of the squad to Fayetteville, Ark. Both meets begin on Friday, Feb. 14 and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 15.
