COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman Joseph Gutierrez (Las Vegas, Nev.) of the No. 6 Mizzou men's swimming team was named Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. He is the first Mizzou swimmer or diver to claim Men's Freshman of the Week honors since Ike Khamis on Jan. 15, 2019.
Gutierrez helped the Tigers close the dual portion of their season with a 180-111 win over Southern Illinois on Jan. 31. The freshman easily won the men's 1000 free in a time of 9:14.26, which stands as a collegiate best and ranks him fifth all-time at Mizzou in the event. The win was his third of the season, all three of which have been in the 1000 free. Gutierrez also placed second in the 500 free against the Salukis after a time of 4:31.01.
The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams are idle until the 2020 Southeastern Conference Championships, held Feb. 18-22 at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center on the campus of Auburn University.
