COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 18/13 Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued action at the three-day Mizzou Invite Friday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The Tiger men lead the field with 866 points, ahead of Kentucky (722) and BYU (99). Kentucky sits first on the women's side with 844 points, followed by Arkansas (597), Mizzou (541) and BYU (55).
TOP TIGERS
Mizzou took top honors in six events on Friday, as five different Tigers claimed wins. Juniors Danny Kovac (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Jack Dubois (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Katrina Brathwaite (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec, Canada) all earned individual wins for the second day in a row.
Brathwaite, who won the 200 IM on Thursday, went under 1:00 in the 100 breast for the first in her career as she won with a 59.51. She now stands as only the third Tiger in program history to go under the 1:00 mark.
The Tigers swept the 100 breast events thanks to a victory from sophomore Ben Patton (Wichita, Kan.) on the men's side. Patton erupted for a personal-best 51.80 in finals, which tied him for third all-time at Mizzou in the event. Patton entered the meet with a career-best 100 breast time of 53.41.
Kovac posted a pair of personal-bests in the 100 fly on Friday, ultimately winning the championship final with a 45.07. The time was only two-hundredths of a second off the NCAA 'A' qualifying time and puts him only two-tenths of a second behind Mizzou's school record in the event.
Dubois earned his second win of the meet in the 400 IM. The junior went 3:46.96 in finals, three seconds faster than his prelims to, to touch first. Dubois also won the 500 free on Thursday.
In the men's 200 free, junior Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn.) touched first with a time of 1:35.69, almost a full second ahead of the second-place finisher.
Mizzou also claimed a win in the men's 200 medley relay, where Dahlgren, Patton, Kovac and junior Kyle Leach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 1:24.47, narrowly missing an NCAA 'A' qualifying time.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Andrew Grevers
"With so many races this morning we were certainly lacking the bodies on the side of the pool with energy, so we talked about it and the Tigers made a commitment to get behind one another better tonight. We saw some great performances tonight. Obviously, the highlights were those 100 breaststrokes, we certainly punched a few NCAA tickets there. Danny Kovac had another fastest time in the 100 fly. At the end of the day, we're seeing amazing performances and there's still room for improvement. We're doing some good things and are hungry for more."
