Baton Rouge, La. — Mizzou Cross Country concluded its 2020 season at the SEC Cross Country Championships in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Friday morning. The teams faced off against conference foes, with the women competing against 13 of the 14 SEC schools.
The men's squad placed sixth overall with 151 points, and the women placed seventh with 230 points. Senior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) and redshirt senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England) both recorded top-5 finishes, with Chapman taking home the bronze, third-place medal.
TOP TIGERS
Chapman recorded a new personal record 19:58.9 in her podium performance. The senior improved on her PR for the second consecutive race, besting her previous time of 20:01.1 set at the Gans Creek Classic on Oct. 3.
Chapman also became the first Mizzou woman to run a sub-20 minute 6000m race since Tori Findley at the SEC Cross Country Championships in 2018.
Behind Chapman, sophomore Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) finished 43rd and freshman McKenna Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.) finished 49th in the loaded field. Revord's performance was enough to win All-SEC Freshman Team.
On the men's side, Wood was followed by strong performances from juniors Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and Marquette Wilhite (Warrensburg, Mo.) and freshmen William Sinclair (Tauwhere, New Zealand) and Blake Morris (Cape Girardeau, Mo.), who all finished in the top-50.
Wood earned All-SEC First Team honors, while Sinclair took home All-SEC Freshman Team honors. Wood's fourth place finish was the highest finish for a Mizzou male since joining the Conference in 2012.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns on the men: "Kieran was locked in from the start today. He put himself up in the front group the entire race and finished strong for fourth. It has been fun to see him find another level of success in cross country after missing last season. Our team got out really well through the first 800m and then we struggled through the middle of the race. I thought we finished strong over the last kilometer but we needed more from our men in the middle k's. Blake Morris really stepped up for us as our fifth man today. Outside of Kieran this a young team and we gained some important experience for the future. We are expecting big things from this crew moving forward and I think they will be ready to shake things up in the conference next year."
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns on the women: ""Sarah ran a very smart race today and put herself in position over the last kilometer to finish in the top 3. She had a fantastic season and we are very proud of her growth over the last year. As a team we feel like we left some points out there. We got buried early and worked hard to battle out but just ran out of time. We are proud of the way the team fought throughout the entire race."
