The Tigers look to build on their solid performance at the Commodore Classic
Columbia, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country will host its first of two home meets of the season on Saturday, Oct. 3, as the Tigers host three SEC opponents for the second annual Gans Creek Classic. The meet will take place at the Gans Creek Recreation Area, the Tiger's 320-acre state-of-the-art cross country facility that opened last season. The men will compete in the 8000m race, which is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. CT, and the women will begin the 6000m race at 10:00 a.m. CT.
Mizzou will run 26 athletes, 14 on the men's side and 12 on the women's. The women will compete against Arkansas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, while the men will take on just Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
On the men's side, the Tigers will look to build on their solid second-place team finish at the Commodore Classic. Freshman standout William Sinclair (Tauwhere, New Zealand) paced the Tigers in his collegiate debut and finished third overall. For his performance, Sinclair earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
The Tigers were also anchored by senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England), junior Marquette Wilhite (Warrensburg, Mo.) and junior Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaira), who each finished in the top-10. Freshman Jack Warner (Kansas City, Mo.) placed 20th to round out the top-5.
The Mizzou women were once again paced by senior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) who finished second overall. Chapman, who posted two top-5 finishes a season ago, will look to build on her success at the Gans Creek Classic. Sophomore Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and freshman McKenna Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.) both posted top-15 finishes to lead the women to a third-place team finish.
Several Tigers will also be making their collegiate debut at the Gans Creek Classic including freshmen runners David Helmerich (Highland Ranch, Colo.), Jackson McAlister (Waterloo, Ill.) and Quentin Worley (Riverside, Mo.), who did not travel with the team to the Commodore Classic.
Last season, the Mizzou men and women swept the inaugural Gans Creek Classic. The Mizzou men, anchored by Thomas George's first-place finish, won the race. The Mizzou women also finished in first, led by Chapman's third-place finish.
Following the Gans Creek Classic, Mizzou will host the Missouri XC Invitational at the Gans Creek Recreation Area on Friday, Oct. 16 for the final meet of the regular season. The Tigers will then hit the road to begin postseason competition with the SEC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30 in Baton Rouge, La.
