Mizzou men finish first overall while the women finish second
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Cross Country defended its home course at the Gans Creek Classic Saturday morning, as redshirt senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England) and senior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) both finished first in the mens and womens races, respectively.
The men placed first as a team with 34 points and the women placed second with 61 points. Both Chapman and Wood set new course records, with Chapman shattering her previous personal record with a time of 20:01 and Wood besting Thomas George's course record by 56.4 seconds with a 23:54.5 time.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Mizzou men have won the meet individually and as a team.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Joining Wood in the top-5 for the men was freshman William Sinclair (Tauwhere, New Zealand) and junior Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), marking the first time that the Mizzou men had three top-5 finishes since the Mizzou XC Opener (8/30/19).
On the women's side, sophomore Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) had another strong finish, placing in the top-10 for the second consecutive race. Freshman McKenna Revord (Hinsdale, Ill.) also continued her impressive collegiate debut, placing 15th as Mizzou's third finisher.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns on the men: "It was a battle the whole way. You learn something about your team when you get in a battle like that. We talked about it all week. We're going to be second half racers today and really focus on that last 3k loop. That's what our guys did and that was the difference."
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns on the women: "On the women's side, I'm really proud of Sarah. For Sarah to come out on top, it's a really good sign of where she's at. She's on a whole other level. Ginger did a great job and showed her strength. That was probably the best finish she's had since she's been here at Mizzou. How about McKenna Revord? In third, a freshman and her second 6k ever."
