COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Tennis team opens its 2019-20 spring season on Saturday, Jan. 25, as the Tigers host Western Illinois for a doubleheader at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Tigers and Leathernecks will first play at 11:00 a.m. CT, followed by a second match at 3:00 p.m. CT. Admission to the match is free.
Under fourth-year head coach Colt Gaston, Mizzou competed in five tournaments in the fall. Overall, Mizzou returns six Tigers from last season's roster and added two newcomers. Included in the pair of newcomers is freshman Elys Ventura (Aukland, New Zealand), who made her Mizzou debut at the Orlando Invitational (Jan. 10-12) with a 2-1 mark in singles play.
Juniors Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) led the way for Mizzou in singles play during the fall season, posting records of 7-5 and 6-2, respectively. Wright recorded her first career win over a ranked opponent at the Orlando Invitational, as she defeated Virginia's No. 78 Sofia Munera, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Mizzou was led by its senior duo team of Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.). The team produced an impressive mark of 7-4 during the fall season, including a ranked win over Rice's No. 37 Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova, the team's first win over a ranked team.
Western Illinois enters the doubleheader with a mark of 0-2 on the season after falling to Butler (Jan. 18) and Western Kentucky (Jan. 19) to open the season.
