Redshirt senior scores her first goal of the season in the 80th minute
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (5-0-0) struck first and got a late goal yet again to down Murray State (2-3-0). Sophomore Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) tallied her fifth goal of the season to propel Mizzou past the Murray State, 2-1 Thursday night at Audrey J. Walton Stadium and continue their undefeated start to the season.
TURNING POINT
Tied at one in the 80th minute, redshirt senior Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Ind.) stepped into the box for a penalty shot after a decisive handball on Murray State. She blasted her shot past the outstretched arms of the Racers (2-3-0) goalkeeper and into the lower-right corner of the net. The goal was Lewis's first of the season, and was off her first penalty kick attempt this year.
With the match scoreless midway through the first half, freshman Jayden Easley (Ozark, Mo.) floated a pass down the right sideline for Cisneros. The sophomore dribbled into a host of Murray State defenders, got the side-step and fired a shot from just outside the box that bent around the Racer's goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
Early in the second half Murray State's Symone Cooper netted the Racers only goal, briefly tying the match at 1-1.
QUOTABLES
- "The thing we got to do moving forward, is we're not going to be able to have this drop of energy after we score first," said head coach Bryan Blitz.
- (The 5-0-0 start) doesn't really mean anything to us," said Blitz. "It's only 20% -- it's like getting an A on your first algebra test. We still have the whole semester to go . . . it's really the end of the season that matters the most."
