COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) converted a penalty kick in the 106th minute to secure a 3-2 double overtime win for Mizzou soccer over Xavier on Sunday afternoon in Columbia, Mo. The win was the Tigers' fourth consecutive to start the year with a perfect 4-0 record, while the Musketeers fell to 2-1-1.
TURNING POINT
With the score knotted at 2-2 in double overtime, Mizzou was awarded a penalty kick after freshman Janna Singleton (DeSoto, Texas) was brought down in the box. Luebbert stepped to the spot and slotted the game-winner off the left post and into the back of the net. The tally was the second of the match for Luebbert, who now has seven points on the young season.
The Tigers started off fierce as Luebbert scored within the first two minutes of the game to as Mizzou grabbed a quick 1-0 lead.
The beginning of the second half mirrored the first. In the 49th minute, Mizzou capitalized on a set piece to take a 2-0 advantage. Redshirt senior Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Ind.) headed a free kick from freshman Eryka McIntyre (Fort Worth, Texas) in front of the net. The ball found the head of senior Peyton Joseph (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who headed in the ball over the goal line for her first career score.
Xavier pulled one back in the 57th minute on a goal from Jackie Richards. The Musketeers continued to pressure the Mizzou defense in the waning minutes and tallied the equalizer off an Emily Burton goal with only 52 seconds left in regulation.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"All of the hard work we're putting in is really paying off. Right now our team is sticking together. That was a good team, Xavier gave us all we could handle. We bent, and we've been bending, but like I told our team, we can't keep having these type of games."
Senior Sarah Luebbert
We definitely want to keep moving forward and focusing on starting early and finishing out the games for a full 90 minutes. It's really reassuring and nice to know we have a team that's going to fight until the final minute."
