LIMA, Peru – Mizzou swimming and diving senior Nick Alexander (St. Louis, Mo.) and former Tiger Michael Chadwick both won medals during Wednesday night action at the 2019 Pan American Games at the Centro Aquatico in Lima, Peru. Alexander picked up an individual silver medal, while Chadwick won gold as part of the United States' mixed 4x100m free relay.
Alexander took home the silver medal to assure a 1-2 United States finish in the men's 200m back. The senior went 1:58.30 in the final, just behind gold medalist Daniel Carr's 1:58.13, and a second and a half faster than his prelims time of 1:59.81. Alexander is the second-straight Tiger to claim silver in the men's 200m back at the Pan American Games, as Carter Griffin took second at the 2015 Games in Toronto.
A member of the USA Swimming 2018-19 National Team, Alexander earned All-America honorable mention honors as part of Mizzou's 200 medley relay at the 2019 NCAA Championships. He ranks second in Missouri history in both the 100y (45.93) and 200y (1:39.98) back and 200y IM (1:43.04), and was the runner-up in the 200 IM at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships.
Chadwick, who concluded his storied Tiger career in 2016, swam the leadoff leg of the mixed 4x100m free relay with a 49.09 split. Team USA teammates Nathan Adrian, Claire Rasmus and Margo Geer followed Chadwick as the U.S. touched in 3:24.84, a full second ahead of runner-up Brazil.
A three-time U.S. National Team member, Chadwick won the 100m free national title at the 2018 U.S. Winter National Championships. He ended his collegiate career as the most decorated Tiger in program history as an 11-time first team and 11-time honorable mention All-American. Five of those first team honors came as an individual, including four over his last two seasons. He finished second in the 100 free at the 2017 NCAA Championships in a school record time of 40.95, which also made him the event's fourth-fastest performer in history. Chadwick also placed fourth in the 50 free and swam on Mizzou's third-place 400 medley relay, fourth-place 200 medley at the 2016 Championships. He still holds the Tiger 50 free (18.97), 100 free (40.95) and 200 IM (1:43.01) records.
Also posting a top eight finish Wednesday in Lima was 2019 graduate Mikel Schreuders, who placed seventh in the 200m free with a time of 1:49.92 for Aruba.
Mizzou's five swimmers at the 2019 Pan American Games, which also includes senior Azra Avdic (Skokie, Ill.) and Giovanni Gutierrez Lozano (Lima, Peru), both of whom are representing Peru, continue action at the meet with preliminary action at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday.
