Javelin duo qualifies for the Pan American Championships in Costa Rica
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field had four student-athletes compete at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships over the weekend, as a pair of javelin throwers finished first and second to qualify for the Pan American Junior Championships in Costa Rica. Freshman Ava Curry (Liberty, Mo.) and incoming freshman Skylar Ciccolini (Lewistown, Pa.) finished first and second, respectively, in the javelin and will represent Team USA in July.
Curry took home the top spot in the event on Friday, as she produced a mark of 48.89m (160-5) to punch her ticket to Costa Rica. The throw was Curry's second-best of the outdoor season, trailing only her mark of 50.74m (166-6) at the Texas Relays (March 28), which ranks third all-time in program history. Ciccolini finished second in the event with a throw of 48.15m (158-0), which would rank sixth all-time in program history if she would have competing for Mizzou. Ciccolini, the 2019 Pennsylvania State Champion and New Balance National Champion in the javelin, posted a personal-best mark of 56.13m (184-2) at the Penn Relays Carnival in April, which ranks as nation's top prep javelin mark this season, ranks ninth in the world on the U20 list, and is the second-best mark ever recorded in U.S. high school history.
Competing on Satruday, freshman Emily Offenheiser (Elizabeth, Ill.) finished ninth in the discus with a mark of 47.61m (156-2), while freshman Arianna Fisher (San Jose, Calif.) finished 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 12.24m (40-2). Offenheiser's mark was a personal-best, while Fisher's mark was the third-best of her outdoor season.
With their first- and second-place finishes, Curry and Ciccolini each qualified for the Pan American Junior Championships, which will be held July 18-21 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
