@MizzouSoftball Walks it off Again, defeats No. 16 South Carolina, 7-6

Wilmes’ 8th-inning Solo Shot Gives Mizzou it’s Second-Straight Walk-off Win

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball (32-21, 12-11) defeated No. 16 South Carolina (35-16, 8-14), 7-6, in walk-off fashion for the second straight day. This time, Mizzou CF Brooke Wilmes provided the theatrics on a perfect day at Mizzou Softball Stadium, launching a walk-off solo home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Tigers again overcame an early deficit, posting four unanswered runs to close out the contest and steal a second straight game from the Gamecocks.

South Carolina came out with an early offensive attack but a first-inning three-run shot by SS Jazmyn Rollin allowed Mizzou to keep pace. During an eventful fourth inning, the Gamecocks pulled out to a 6-3 advantage before Mizzou LF Regan Nash responded with a two-run double in the bottom half of the frame. The Tigers then called upon pitcher Madi Norman, who went the distance in last night's game. Norman dominated South Carolina's bats while the Mizzou offense was able to scratch across the tying run on a Gamecock error in the bottom of the fifth. Norman continued her roll until Wilmes came through in the bottom of the eighth with the walk-off dinger.

TOP TIGERS

  • Wilmes went 4-for-5 at the dish with a pair of singles, a double and the walk-off shot. Wilmes collected her second career four-hit game and her solo shot was her fifth of the season. She has now totaled 11 hits over her last six games.
  • Rollin cranked a three-run shot in the first inning to give Mizzou an early 3-2 advantage. Rollin's bomb was her tenth of the season. She is the first Mizzou freshman to total at least ten home runs in a season since Braxton Burnside posted 12 during the 2016 season.
  • Norman entered in the fifth inning and worked 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out three. After dominating the Gamecocks during the late innings last night, Norman held the South Carolina bats in check again, keeping them off the board to allow Mizzou's offense to battle back. With the win, Norman improves to 17-8 on the season. Dating back to last night, Norman has now worked 8.0 straight scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and striking out 11 during that stretch.
  • After playing large roles in last night's thrilling win, Mizzou 3B Kim Wert and 1B Kolby Romaine both posted two-hit performances. The pair have both now posted back-to-back two-hit games.

TURNING POINT

With the Tigers trailing 6-5 heading to the bottom of the fifth, Mizzou took advantage of South Carolina mistakes to continue the comeback. Hatti Moore reached to leadoff the frame on an E3 and then moved to second on a passed ball. Wert then softly dribbled a grounder to the right side that was misplayed by the South Carolina first baseman. While the ball was being retrieved, Moore hustled around to score from second, sliding in safely to tie the game at six.

After Mizzou was able to tie the ballgame, Norman faced trouble in the top half of the sixth. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Norman induced a key twin-killing 5-4-3 double play before getting a 6-3 groundout to end the inning and preserve the tie ballgame. After Mizzou went quietly in their half of the sixth, Norman came through again. The Mizzou righty stranded a runner at first in the seventh and worked a perfect top of the eighth to keep the Gamecocks off of the board.

In the bottom of the eighth, after a Mizzou scoring chance evaporated an inning earlier, Wilmes stepped to the plate to lead off the inning. After taking a ball to start the at bat, Wilmes barreled a middle-cut fastball and sent a walk-off home run over the right field fence. Wilmes was mobbed as she crossed the plate and the Tigers celebrated for the second time in less than 24 hours.

QUOTEABLES

"These kinds of games push your team to the limit," Coach Anderson said. "To grind back into another game where we were down, it shows the belief we always talk about. I am so happy for Brooke. Madi was unbelievable. Eli was big for us in the middle of that game, too. A complete team win today."
