@MizzouSoftball Rallies From Four Down, Topples No. 13 Kentucky

Mizzou is 3-0 in its Last Three SEC Games

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mizzou Softball (14-12, 3-4) came back to beat No. 13 Kentucky (21-8, 6-1), 10-8, at John Cropp Stadium on Friday night. Mizzou handed Kentucky its first loss in SEC play so far this season, while pushing its own SEC winning streak out to three straight wins, the longest for the program since the Tigers swept Mississippi State back in 2016 (April 29 – May 1).

Sophomore pitcher Cassie Gasper got the win, as she was fantastic over the final 2.2 innings of play. She shut down a Wildcat lineup that had scored eight runs in just four innings of play, allowing just two hits and no runs to close out the game.

TOP TIGERS

  • Freshman SS Jazmyn Rollin continues to roll for the Tigers, as she hit a home run for the third game in a row. She now has six homers this season, good for second on the team.
  • Sophomore 3B Kimberly Wert bombed her team-leading ninth home run of the season in the first inning, another two-run shot.
  • Sophomore RF Brooke Wilmes only had one hit on the day, but it was a big one. In the top of the eighth, Wilmes smacked a double to left that would score two and give the Tigers the lead for good.
  • Senior LF Regan Nash had the only multi-hit showing of the game for the Tigers, going 2-5 with one run scored. She also made a great catch at the wall to send the game to extra innings.

TURNING POINT

The Tigers faced a four-run deficit heading into the top of the fifth, and had only won one game so far this season when trailing after four innings. However, the Tigers' fortunes changed in the fifth inning, as the Black & Gold hung a four spot on the Cats to knot the game back up at eight. All the damage in the frame was done with two outs, as senior 1B Kolby Romaine and redshirt freshman 2B Kendyll Bailey each hit RBI doubles that scored two runs.

The bats for both teams would go quite through regulation, though Kentucky nearly homered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a play that was thwarted by Nash's great catch. In the top of the eighth, the Tigers would strike, as Wilmes would drive in two with a double to left. The two runs would prove to be enough, as the Tigers would hang on to win.

QUOTEABLES

"It was unbelievable," Coach Anderson said. "We played to win, not to avoid losing. It didn't matter that we were down four. We just continued to drive their pitchers crazy with quality at bat after quality at bat. Unbelievably proud of this team tonight."
