COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, with a 4-0 win over UMKC and a 4-1 loss to Florida at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Tigers went to 11-5 overall and 0-4 in the Southeastern Conference with the two matches, while the Gators improved to 6-5 and 3-1, and UMKC dropped to 3-7 on the season.
FLORIDA 4, MIZZOU 1
Florida took a 1-0 advantage with wins in two of the three doubles matches. The Tigers started this with a 6-3 win at No. 3 action, where sophomore Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) and freshman Lisa Fukutoku (Tokyo, Japan) downed Anastasia Kharitonov and Marlee Zein. But the Gators No. 2 team of Ida Jarlskog and Tsveta Dimitrova defeated junior Gabrielle Golden (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas), and Victoria Emma and McCartney Kessler earned a 6-4 victory over junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) at No. 1 doubles.
The Gators used wins at No. 2 and 1 singles to build a 3-0 advantage, as Nash lost to No. 44 Kessler, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, and Middlebrooks fell to No. 12 Jarlskog, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1.
Wright pulled one back for the Tigers with a win at No. 4 action, with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Marlee Zein. However, Dimitrova defeated Gruber, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to clinch the Florida win.
Fukutoku seemed poised to knock off No. 52 Victoria Emma but the match ended with her leading 7-6, 6-7, 5-2.
MIZZOU 4, UMKC 0
Convincing wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles gave the Tigers an early 1-0 edge over the visiting Kangaroos. Oliveira and Fukutoku notched their second doubles victory of the day after a 6-3 defeat of Riddhi Thanushree Vale and Katie Fries at No. 3. Then at No. 1, Middlebrooks and Wright dispatched Yana Grechkina and Michela Xibilia, 6-2.
Mizzou went up 2-0 when Fukutoku, up 6-2, won by retirement over Grechkina at No. 3 singles. After a tight first set, Middlebrooks breezed through her second to post a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Xibilia at No. 1 action for a 3-0 Tiger lead.
The Tigers then clinched the win when Gruber downed Sharma, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
