TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mizzou Softball fell to No. 5 Alabama on Sunday, dropping its third straight game in the series to the Tide at Rhoads Stadium. Mizzou moves to 11-10 on the season, while Alabama remains undefeated at 25-0.
Alabama's offense was again electric, scoring 11 runs, all of which were scored by way of home runs. Mizzou came out strong again, scoring two runs in the first inning, but Alabama scored nine of its 11 in the first two frames to blow the game open early.
Senior P Madi Norman got the start and the loss, giving up three home runs in just one inning of work. Junior P Eli Daniel was solid, putting in four innings of work while only allowing two earned runs.
TOP TIGERS
- Freshman DP Geana Torres was the Tigers' most consistent threat at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBI. It was the third multi-RBI game of her career.
- Sophomore RF Brooke Wilmes, who started her first game this season in the outfield against Alabama, was good offensively and defensively, going 1-4 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI, while robbing a home run at the wall.
TURNING POINT
For the second straight game, Mizzou came out of the gates hot, scoring two runs in the first inning. For the next three innings, though, it was all Tide.
Alabama's first batter went yard on the first pitch she faced, halving the deficit in just one swing. Norman would go on to give up two more home runs in the inning, both of which were two-run shots, pushing the Alabama lead out to three. The Tide would pull away in the bottom of the second, as a grand slam would put the score at 9-2. The Tigers would cut the lead to four with a three-run fourth inning, but it wouldn't be enough.
QUOTEABLES
"Before we can do anything else, we have to start believing we can win," Coach Anderson said. "You can see that Alabama believes that no matter what, they are going to win. Down two today? It didn't affect them. Down seven on Friday night? That didn't affect them either. This team has all the necessary talent to succeed. We just need to believe in our individual talent, believe in each other, and we will start stringing wins together."
