TEMPE, Ariz. – Mizzou Softball fell in both of its games at the Tempe Sports Complex on Saturday, losing to No. 25 Oregon 6-1 in the first game and then dropping a heartbreaker to Oregon State, 4-3, in an eight-inning thriller.
Junior P Eli Daniel got the nod against the Ducks, but tallied her first loss of the young season (0-1). Senior P Madi Norman, meanwhile, went the distance for the second time in as many starts against the Beavers, but picked up her first loss this season to drop to 1-1.
TOP TIGERS – OREGON
- Redshirt Freshman 2B Kendyll Bailey launched the first homerun of her career in the bottom of the sixth to put the Tigers on the board. Bailey now has a four-game hitting streak, the longest of any Tiger.
- Senior 1B Kolby Romaine went 2-3 at the plate with two singles. Romaine now has two multi-hit games this season and 23 multi-hit games in her career. Romaine had just nine multi-hit games all of last season.
TURNING POINT - OREGON
The Tigers held Oregon scoreless until the third inning, when the Ducks put together two singles from Haley Cruse and Allee Bunker followed by a deep sac fly from April Utecht to score Cruse. A single from Shaye Bowden scored Bunker, which turned out to be the winning run.
The Tigers rallied in the sixth with the solo home run for Bailey followed by a single by Romaine and a stolen base by pinch runner Danie Garrison, the first of her career. However, the momentum did not prove to be enough to push across any more runs.
TOP TIGERS – OREGON STATE
- Sophomore C Hattie Moore drove in two of the Tiger's three runs, marking her first multi-RBI game of the season and just the third of her career.
- Sophomore 3B Kim Wert went 2-4 with a solo homerun, her second homer of the season. Wert registered the first multi-hit game of her career.
TURNING POINT – OREGON STATE
It looked as if the Tigers would complete the comeback in the bottom of the seventh, as senior LF Regan Nash registered her only hit of the day before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bailey. However, Romaine would strike out and Wert would fly out to send the game to extra innings.
With international rules being enforced, an OSU runner was placed on second to start the eighth inning. On a line-drive single out to center field, OSU would take the one run lead. Mizzou would not advance its runner, as Callie Martin and Kara Decker would strike out while Moore would ground-out to end the game. Â
QUOTEABLES
"In the first game, we just gave up too many free bases," head coach Larissa Anderson said. "We can't expect to win many games giving up nine walks and having three errors. In game two, we had our chances to win. We need to experience games like this to learn how to capitalize on those opportunities. The one opportunity to win a game like that might come in the first inning and we need to learn to take advantage of that"
