CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Mizzou Softball had its six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon, as the Tigers fell to BYU, 7-3, at the Big League Dreams Complex. Mizzou managed to keep it close over the first four innings, but a four-run fifth inning from the Cougars proved too much for the Black & Gold to overcome.
Sophomore P Cassie Gasper suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 3-1. She also surrendered three earned runs, the first three she has given up all season.
TOP TIGERS
- Sophomore 3B Kimberly Wert went yard again, hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the second. She leads Mizzou with five home runs so far this season.
- Freshman DP Geana Torres smacked another RBI against the Cougars in the bottom of the third. She now has nine RBI this season.
- Sophomore C Hatti Moore was the only Tiger with multiple hits, as she went 2-3 on the day, while also scoring a run on a wild pitch.
TURNING POINT
The Tigers were trading offensive blows with the Cougars in the early going, as it was a 3-2 BYU lead going into the fifth inning. Then, the Cougar bats got hot.
The run was started with a sacrifice fly out to center that would score one, and the game was blown open by a three-run home run that came in the next at bat. Mizzou would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as the fifth inning would prove to be the difference in an otherwise competitive game.
QUOTEABLES
"We had that 'Front-runner' mentality today," Coach Anderson said. "We picked each other up and were supportive of each other when things were going well last weekend, but we didn't do that at all today when things got tough. We really need to use days like this to learn. It's not about one individual. It's about the team. It's about Mizzou."
UP NEXT
Mizzou is scheduled for just one game tomorrow, as they are currently set to take on No. 2 UCLA at 10:30 p.m. CT. However, due to the weather and the suspension of play against No. 14 Arizona, all scheduling is currently tentative. Please stay tuned to our social media for updates.
