Senior Matt Echelmeier earned a Top-10 finish
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men's Golf finished sixth overall at the 2019 SunTrust Gator Invitational, which featured seven ranked teams in the latest GolfStat rankings. En route to its sixth-place performance, Mizzou bested No. 38 West Virginia and No. 41 Georgia Southern by four strokes and 14 strokes, respectively.
All five teams that finished ahead of Mizzou on the leaderboard are ranked in the nation's Top 33. Mizzou finished the tournament with 44 birdies.
The Tigers shot a 17-over par 857 on Florida's Par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course, moving up two spots on the leaderboard with a strong final round. On Sunday, Mizzou shot an impressive even-par as a team.
Senior Matt Echelmeier paced the Tigers all weekend, finishing tied for seventh individually. He carded a 2-under par 208 to lead Mizzou. The performance marked his seventh career Top-10 finish and the lowest 54-hole score of his career. Echelmeier ended the tournament with 12 total birdies and a 2-under 68 on the final day of action.
Sophomore Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland) added another top-20 finish to his 2018-2019 season, finishing tied for 18th after a 2-over par tournament total (69-73-70—212). Stewart has yet to finish outside the top-20 this season.
Rory Franssen (Inverness, Scotland) fired a final round one-under par 69 to finish with a tournament total of 10-over par 220 (72-79-69). He placed tied for 49th.
Senior Luigi Botta (Cueno, Italy) finished with a tournament total of 11-over par 221 (73-75-73) while freshman Tommy Boone (Plano, Texas) concluded the tournament at 17-over 227 (75-75-77).
Mizzou will make a quick turn-around as the Tigers head to Opelika, Ala., for the Auburn Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner next weekend.
