Mauller, Flynn and Koelling pick up wins in season-opener
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Seventh-ranked Mizzou Wrestling dropped its season opener at No. 18 Virginia Tech, 29-10, Saturday afternoon at Cassel Coliseum. The Tigers tallied wins at 149 pounds, 174 pounds and 197 pounds, but couldn't overcome a forfeit at 133 and three bonus-point wins by the Hokies. Mizzou falls to 0-1 on the season while Tech goes to 1-0. Mizzou will be back in action Sunday at the Southeast Open as 15 wrestlers will take part in the tournament in Roanoke, Va.
Second-ranked Brock Mauller opened the dual for Mizzou in a top-25 bout and he dominated No. 23 Brent Moore, 6-0. He used a 5-0 second period and then rode Moore out in the third to secure the riding time point and seal the shutout. Mizzou lost the next two bouts at 157 and 165 pounds as Virginia Tech took a 7-3 lead into the 174-pound bout.
Eighth-ranked Connor Flynn then got Mizzou going again, using a dominant 12-1 major decision over Cody Hughes to tie the dual at 7-7. With the dual tied, the 184-pound bout featured a top-20 matchup with each team trying to take control of the dual. No. 14 Dylan Wisman trailed No. 9 Hunter Bolen, 5-3, heading into the second period and the bout remained close throughout. Bolen was charged for stalling late in the third to tie the spat at 9-9, but he had the riding time point to escape with a 10-9 win over Wisman as Virginia Tech took a 10-7 lead at the midway point.
No. 20 Wyatt Koelling then tallied an 8-1 decision over Stan Smeltzer to tied the dual at 10-10. The tie was short lived as Virginia Tech's John Borst claimed an 11-3 major decision over Rodrigo Diaz to put Mizzou in a 14-10 hole with three bouts remaining.
As the dual flipped back to the 125-pounders, Mizzou needed a win from sophomore Dack Punke, but he dropped a 2-0 decision. Mizzou then forfeited at 133 and suffered a pin at 141 as Tech closed out the dual with four straight wins to secure the dual triumph.
