Mizzou Football Falls to No. 11 Florida, 23-6

Tigers tally a season-high four sacks, including three from its dynamic DT duo of Whiteside and Elliott
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football was upended by No. 11 Florida, 23-6, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, despite a spirited effort from its defense that turned in a season-high four sacks. The Tigers fall to 5-5 on the year and 2-4 in SEC play while the 11th-ranked Gators improve to 9-2 and 6-2 in SEC play. The loss was Mizzou's first at home this season and snapped a current seven-game home winning streak that dated back to the 2018 season.
Mizzou limited Florida to just 58 rushing yards on the day, the fifth time this season that Mizzou has limited an opponent to fewer than 100 yards. The defense also limited Florida to just three third-down conversions on 14 attempts.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou's defensive line was dominant in the first half, sacking Florida QB Kyle Trask four times as the game was without a touchdown in the opening 30 minutes. Despite the efforts from the Mizzou defense, Florida took a 6-3 lead into the break. The Tigers got the ball to open the second half, but could not sustain a drive. Florida took over and tallied the game's first TD, a 34-yard pass from Trask to WR Josh Hammond, extending Florida's lead to two scores at 13-3.
Mizzou pulled within one score with a 28-yard Tucker McCann field goal with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter. Florida, however, answered with a 15-yard TD strike from Trask to Lamical Perine to extend its lead and put the game out of reach for Mizzou.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Junior DT Kobie Whiteside tallied his second multi-sack game of the season, posting 2.0 in the first half. He leads Mizzou with 6.0 sacks on the season.
- LB Nick Bolton, the SEC's leading tackler, posted six tackles with a pass breakup. All six of his tackles were of the solo variety.
- S Khalil Oliver posted four tackles and a pair of pass breakups, the latter of which are a career-best.
- Junior RB Larry Rountree III moved into sixth place on Mizzou's career rushing list with 30 yards on seven carries. He now has 2,617 career yards in his career.
GAME NOTES
Team Notes
- Senior K Tucker McCann nailed his sixth field goal of 40+ yards this season. McCann is six-of-seven (86-percent) in attempts of 40 yards or more on the year.
- Senior K/P Tucker McCann booted three punts of 50+ yards to bring his season total to 18. McCann also recorded his 21st punt to fall inside the 20 yard line this season.
- McCann's pair of successful field goals mark the fourth game this season in which the senior has recorded multiple made field goals.
Offensive Notes
- RS sophomore WR Barrett Banister earned his first career start as a Tiger. Banister tied his career high in receptions with three catches on the day.
- Junior RB Larry Rountree III's 30 rushing yards moved him up to sixth on Mizzou's career rushing list. With his 2,617 career rushing yards Rountree III passed legendary Tiger RB Darrell Wallace (1984-87) who finished his career with 2,607 rushing yards.
- Sophomore WR Jalen Knox's 44-yard reception near the start of the second quarter was his longest reception since Sept. 14 when he reeled in a 54-yard strike against SEMO. Knox also recorded his first multiple-reception game since the mid-September tilt versus the Red Hawks. Knox finished the day with four receptions for 53 yards.
- Sophomore RB Tyler Badie's five receptions were his second-most in a game this season since he had seven receptions against Wyoming.
- RS junior RB Dawson Downing snagged three receptions, tying his career high.
- Graduate WR Jonathan Nance hauled-in four passes on the afternoon, matching his season high. It's the third time this year he's produced four receptions, all occurring in SEC play. He finished the day with a team-high 58 yards.
Defensive Notes
- Mizzou recorded four or more sacks for just the third time since the start of the 2017 season. (Arkansas in 2018 and South Carolina in 2019). After a stretch of 24 games without reaching the feat, Mizzou has now done it in three of its last 12 contests. Each of the sacks came in the first half.
- It was only the second time this year that the Gators failed to record a first-half touchdown.
- Junior DT Kobie Whiteside caused havoc in the first half and recorded his fifth and sixth sacks of the season, this leads the team.This was Whiteside's second multi-sack game of the season. His first came since against South Carolina (Sept. 21).
- Whiteside also matched a season-high in tackles with four on the day. The four solo tackles were the most of Whiteside's career.
- Graduate S Khalil Oliver broke up a pair of passes on the day, his first time with multiple in a single game this season. He has now had a pass break up in five different contests on the year. It was a big day for Oliver, who set a career-high with five solo tackles. He also set a career-high with two tackles for loss. This matched his season total in that category entering the game.
- Redshirt junior DT Jordan Elliot recorded his second sack of the season, and first since he had 1.0 against South Carolina.
- Elliot has been on a tear and has now recorded at least three tackles in six-consecutive games. The junior has recorded a tackle for loss in each home game this season.
- Sophomore CB Jarvis Ware set a career-high with six tackles on the afternoon.
- Senior Tre' Williams tallied his first sack of the season and his first in a Missouri uniform. His last sack came over two years ago in 2017 while at Auburn (Sept. 9 vs. Clemson).
- Senior CB DeMarkus Acy now has a pass break up in three straight games.
