COLLEGE STATION, Texas. – A ranked opponent on the road did little to daunt the Mizzou Soccer team. The Tigers (7-9-1, 1-7-1 SEC) attacked from the starting whistle against No. 22 Texas A&M, as Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) scored in the 3' minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies (11-3-1, 5-2-1 SEC) responded over the next 87 minutes to claim a 5-3 victory over Mizzou, Sunday at Ellis Field.
TURNING POINT
- After Luebbert's opening goal, Texas A&M responded with a trio of goals in the first half to take a decisive lead.
- The Aggies scored twice in a span of 5:38 to claim the lead from Mizzou. Ally Watt scored on goals in the penalty area in the 16' and 21' minute to pull ahead in the match. Watt would add goals in 50' and the 56' minute.
QUOTABLE
- "We're disappointed with the loss and disappointed for our seniors," said head coach Bryan Blitz. "The fight they showed here on the road at a very good Texas A&M to comeback and make it a game in the second half is pretty impressive. You know they'll take that effort into sending our seniors off right against a good Mississippi State team on Thursday."
TOP TIGERS
- Opening the match with a goal in the first three minutes, Luebbert finished the afternoon with two shots, one being on goal.
- The senior now has eight goals on the season, and leads the team with 22 points on the season. This is the first time Luebbert has scored over 20 points for Mizzou since she had 22 as a sophomore.
- Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) improved to a perfect five-for-five on penalty kick attempts in her career. Cisneros took the attempt in the 61' minute after Luebbert drew a foul in the penalty area. Cisneros' goal was her second penalty kick this week after she was successful against Alabama on Thursday night.
- Cisneros and Luebbert would threaten again in the 78' minute, pressuring the Aggies to commit an own-goal.
NOTES
- The loss officially eliminates Mizzou from a berth in the SEC Tournament, Nov. 3-10, ending a streak of seven-consecutive years reaching the conference tournament.
- Luebbert moves into a tie for seventh in career goals with 29 in her career (Melissa Peabody- 2001-04), and she is now alone in eighth in career points with 79.
- Luebbert has now scored a goal against eight-of-13 SEC opponents in her career. The lone schools she has not reached the back of the net against are: Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State and LSU.
- Mizzou will end the season winless on the road in SEC play, going 0-4-1 in conference play. The Tigers' lone win away from the friendly confines of Walton Stadium came against Ohio State, Aug. 25.
- Sunday's match was only the second multiple-goal loss of the season for Mizzou.
- The loss continues a streak of nine-straight losses to ranked opponents for the Tigers, dating back to a 3-1 win over then No. 9 Kentucky (Sept. 25, 2015). Mizzou is 10-23-2 in ranked matches in the SEC era (2012-present).
