NORFOLK, Va. - The Mizzou tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with a 4-2 defeat to Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. The Tigers fell to 3-1 with the loss, while the Monarchs improved to 4-1.
DOUBLES
Old Dominion took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 action. Yulia Starodubtseva and Oleksandra Andrieieva defeated sophomore Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) and freshman Vivien Ábrahám (Budapest, Hungary), 6-2, at No. 2 doubles before Natalya Malenko and Nataliia Vlasova posted a 6-3 win over junior Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) at No. 3 to clinch the point.
SINGLES
The Monarchs earned victories at the top three singles positions and claim the dual victory. At No. 2 play, Vlaskova defeated freshman Lisa Fukutoku (Tokyo, Japan), 6-3, 6-2, while Andrieieva notched a 7-6, 6-2 win over Nash at No. 3. A 7-6, 6-4 win for Holly Hutchinson over junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at No. 1 gave Old Dominion the win.
Sophomore Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) improved to a perfect 4-0 on the spring season after claiming a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Brooke Pilkington at No. 4 singles. Also victorious for the Tigers was Abraham, who downed Alesya Yakubovic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 6.

"This was a tough one for us today. I really thought the we competed well and put ourselves in good positions throughout the match. But we didn't close out matches the way we wanted to and it cost us. I give a lot of credit to Old Dominion, they came out and played the big points better than us today. We definitely learned a lot and will look to bounce back against Morgan State."
