Vilches cleared seven feet in the high jump for the second time this season on Friday
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field freshman Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) has named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday. At the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday, the Tiger freshman recorded his a first-place finish in the high jump, his second of the season.
Vilches cleared the seven-foot mark for the second time this season in Iowa, as he won the meet with a jump of 2.21m (7-3). The mark is his second-best mark of the season, trailing only the school record mark of 2.26m (7-5) which he set at the Missouri Intercollegiate (Jan. 11). That jump currently ranks third in the NCAA this season.
Vilches was a prized recruit for the Tigers, as he captured a gold medal in the high jump at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships with a clearance of 2.23m (7-3.75), and held the top U20 high jump mark in the world in 2018 after jumping 2.26m (7-5) at an April 28 meet in Queretaro, Mexico.
Mizzou returns home for its next meet, as the Tigers host the Missouri Open on Friday, Jan. 25.
