COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (2-4-1) claimed a hard-fought victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-2-1) early Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium, nabbing a 2-0 result in windy conditions. Following a defense-dominated first period, the Tigers came out after the break with the offense clicking. Breakthrough for the Tigers came in the form of a beautifully converted penalty kick from redshirt junior Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Ind.) in the 65th minute, following a Gonzaga handball in the box. With a 1-0 lead, head coach Bryan Blitz and the Tigers continued their offensive tempo, culminating in a dagger from redshirt junior Bethany Coons (Union, Mo.) in the top left corner of the goal to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead to secure the win.
With senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey's eighth career clean sheet, and her first of the season, the Tigers registered their first shutout win of the season. The Tigers offensive was also excellent throughout the game, as Blitz's side recorded its first two offensive-goal game since October 26, 2017 against LSU. The victory also gives the Tigers their first win against the Bulldogs in program history.
TURNING POINT
Defense was the name of the game for the first 65 minutes inside Walton Stadium. With neither team able to break through, progress came in the form of a Gonzaga handball in the box off of excellent offensive build up from the Black & Gold. Lewis stepped up to the spot and delivered a bullet, driving the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net. The goalkeeper got a hand to it, but it wasn't enough to stop it.
