Wood & George pace the Mizzou men, four finish in the top-30 for the women
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Mizzou Cross Country team continued its season on Saturday at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill., as the women's team took fifth place and the men's team placed eighth in the highly competitive invitational. Freshman Tori Findley (Blue Springs, Mo.) finished first for the Mizzou women while placing 13th overall. Kieran Wood (Cambridge, U.K.) finished first for the men while placing fifth overall.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Findley led the Tigers in the 5k race with a time of 17:21.75, setting a new PR and a new season-best for the Mizzou women in the 5k. Redshirt junior Sophia Racette (St. Louis, Mo.) was second for the Tigers and 24th overall with a season-best time of 17:38, followed by freshman Mikayla Reed (Washington, Mo.) who placed 27th overall with a time of 17:41, setting a new PR.
For the men, Wood paced Mizzou for the first time in his career, finishing fifth overall with a time of 24:18.04. Redshirt junior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) finished right behind Wood with a time of 24:18.11, placing sixth overall.
QUOTABLES
"It was great to be at the reinstated Lakefront Invitational," said head coach Marc Burns. "We have quite a few Tigers from the Chicago-land area, so it was nice to see them get a chance to run in front of family and friends. Our women got buried early in the race and did a great job of working through the pack. We were able to get all the way up to fifth-place, but gave away a shot at a top-three finish by getting caught back in the pack early. It is a good learning experience for them and they handled it well."
"Our men's team got out well and Thomas and Kieran ran strong up front the whole way," Burns said. "Their consistency has been a key for us so far in the season. Evan ran tough and Martin came on strong over the second half of the race to help us out. We are excited to move into the second half of the season and prepare for the upcoming championship races."
UP NEXT
Mizzou's next appearance will be in two weekends when the team will split between the National Open on Friday, Oct. 12, in University Park, Pa., at 9:45 a.m. (CT) and the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, Oct. 12 in Peoria, Ill., at 4 p.m. (CT). These will be the last two regular season meets for Mizzou before opening the postseason at the SEC Championships on Oct. 26, at Auburn, Ala.
