Tigers Stand 11th After Friday's First Round
FRANKLIN, TN. – The Mizzou Women's Golf team continued its fall season with a solid day in Friday's opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championship, played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club (North Course – Par 72/6,430 yards) in Franklin, Tenn. Mizzou had good days from its top two in the lineup, as junior Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and senior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) both shot one-under par 71s to set the pace and put them tied for 18th individually in the three-day tournament.
As a team, Mizzou stands in 11th place in the 15-team field, after a team round of 295 (seven-over par) Friday, but Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer's team finds itself just seven shots out of fifth place entering round two Saturday.
Yuen and Allen tied the program record for lowest first round at the Mason Rudolph, equaling the 71 turned in by Maria Ohlsson in 2004. They also became just the fourth and fifth Tigers ever to post a sub-par round at the tournament. Starting on the back nine Friday, Yuen was at even par (36), and finished up at one-under 35 on the front nine, thanks to a pair of birdies. Allen was a mirror image, as she was one-under par on the back (including a pair of birdies) and was even on the front, parring holes one through nine in the process.
Senior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) was solid in the third spot, as she carded a two-over par 74, putting her in a tie for 38th after day one. Senior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) ended the day tied for 65th individually with a seven-over par 79 (finishing two-under in her final eight holes), while junior Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) was just one shot behind and tied for 73rd place.
"We had a good comeback on our second nine holes today," said Priesmeyer. "Our top three had really nice days. Jess and Emma had so many looks at birdie, and even though they couldn't get a lot of those putts to drop, they did a great job of staying patient and taking what the course gave them, even though they both felt a lower number was out there. This is such a stacked field, to make a move up the leaderboard we've got to have everyone come out firing the next two days, and we certainly can do it. We just have to minimize the big numbers and stay patient," she said.
