COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (4-4-1) continues SEC conference play this week after defeating Kentucky and Portland State last week. On Thursday, the Tigers will make their first trip of the conference season, as the Black & Gold travels to Athens, Ga. for a matchup against Georgia (4-3-2). Following the game against the Bulldogs, Mizzou will return home to try to snap Vanderbilt's (8-1-0) eight-game win streak at Walton Stadium.
Mizzou is on a streak of its own at the moment, reeling off three straight victories, beating Gonzaga, Kentucky and Portland State in its last three games. Junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) took over against the Vikings in Mizzou's 2-1 win, going for two unassisted goals, including the game winner in the 60th minute. The pair of goals marked her first two of the season. After suffering a bit of a scoring slump, it appears the Tiger offense has roared back to life, as the team has scored five goals in its last three contests.
TALKING POINTS
- This is the first three game winning streak for the Black & Gold since the program went on a similar run last year from Sept. 10 - Sept. 17. In that span, the Tigers beat San Diego State, Georgia and Albany, and all of those wins also came at home.
- With her brace against Portland State, Luebbert becomes the first Tiger to score two goals in the same game since she did it last season against Tennessee.
- Luebbert now has 19 career goals, which has moved her into a tie for ninth-most goals in Mizzou Soccer history. The junior forward now shares ninth place with Amber Swinehart and Kristin Boeker.
- Mizzou, Georgia and Vanderbilt are all 1-0 in the SEC. They make up three out of seven teams still perfect in conference play.
- With their win against Kentucky, the Tigers remain perfect in SEC conference openers. Mizzou is a perfect 7-0 in such games, dating back to the program's entrance into the SEC in 2012.
- Sophomore midfielder Cassidy Nurnberger (New Haven, Mo.) scored her first collegiate goal against Kentucky. Luebbert drew the PK, and Nurnberger slotted it into the bottom right corner to secure the win.
- The Tigers had back-to-back games with PK game winners. Redshirt junior Madison Lewis provided the game winner against Gonzaga on a PK of her own.
- Until now, Mizzou had never converted PKs in back-to-back games since the program started. The closest they had been to accomplishing the feat was back in 2011, when they had two over a three game span. The Tigers converted PKs against Kansas (10/21/11) and against Baylor (11/2/11), but not against Iowa State (10/28/11).
- Mizzou registered its second straight shutout against Kentucky. Mizzou last registered consecutive shutouts early last season, as they drew with Oregon State 0-0 (8/25/17) and beat Iowa State 2-0 (8/20/17).
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT… GEORGIA
- Georgia has an overall record of 4-3-2 this season, defeating San Diego, Charlotte and Georgia State in non-conference play. The Bulldogs also recently defeated Arkansas, 3-1, in their SEC conference opener.
- Georgia's most recent game, against Murray State, was canceled because of impending inclement weather.
- The Tigers have a 5-1 all-time record against the Bulldogs.
- Georgia has scored 14 goals, while recording 115 shots this season. The Bulldogs have only allowed eight goals.
- Sophomore forward Reagan Glisson (Savannah, Ga.) has scored half of the team's goals this season. She leads the team with seven goals and 34 shots. Glisson also scored a hat trick in the Bulldog's game against Charlotte.
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT… VANDERBILT
- After losing their first game to then-No. 10 Florida State, the Commodores have won eight straight games, defeating Jacksonville, Miami (Fla.), Ohio, Saint Louis, North Alabama, Western Kentucky, Georgia State and Florida.
- Vanderbilt has recorded five shutouts on the season.
- The 'Dores have recorded 20 goals and 113 shots on the season. Forwards Haley Hopkins and Kaylann Boyd lead the team with 5 goals and 22 shots each.
- The Tigers have a 5-1-2 all-time record against the Commodores but have beaten the 'Dores four times since joining the SEC. The two teams first met on Sept. 15, 2008.
- The Commodores eight-game win streak is the longest for the team since 2005. During the 2005 season, they won 11 games in a row.
- Vanderbilt opened SEC conference play against Florida and defeated the Gators, 2-1. This marked the first time the Commodores defeated the Gators since 1997.
