Tigers set to face Iowa and Iowa State away from home over the weekend

COLUMBIA, Mo. – @MizzouSoccer kicks off its regular season this weekend, as the Tigers head to Iowa to play both Iowa and Iowa State. The Tigers will face the Hawkeyes Friday night at 7 p.m. CT at the Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City, Iowa. The Black & Gold will then square off against the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, Sunday at 2 p.m. CT in the Cyclone Sports Complex.
TALKING POINTS
- The Tigers rolled to a 2-0 record in their preseason slate, beating Missouri State 6-0 at home, then besting Oklahoma State in Kansas City, 2-1.
- Mizzou's offensive arsenal was on full display during the exhibition schedule, as six different Tigers registered at least one point over the two-game stretch.
- Mizzou's defense also showed well in the preseason, allowing just one goal. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) led the team with four saves over the two games.
- Sophomore forward Bella Alessi (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman midfielder Skye Kingsley each had two goals in the preseason. Alessi scored both against Missouri State, including a goal within the first seven seconds of the game. Kingsley, meanwhile, scored both of her goals in the second half against Oklahoma State to help the Tigers fend off the Cowgirls.
- Junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.), redshirt junior forward Bethany Coons (Union, Mo.), sophomore forward Morcquess Oliphant (Frisco, Texas) and freshman forward Blythe Beldner (Wildwood, Mo.) all scored one goal in the preseason.
- Beldner also managed to lead the Tigers in assists, registering two in the preseason. Luebbert also had an assist against Oklahoma State, while freshman midfielder Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif) had one against Missouri State.
- Luebbert, Coons and junior defender Anna Frick (Webster Groves, Mo.) all earned spots on the 2018 SEC Preseason Watch List, which was announced by the league office on August 15.
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT … IOWA
- Mizzou owns a 8-1 record over the Hawkeyes. However, the Hawkeyes won the last matchup, 2-1 (OT), back in August of 2016 in Columbia, Mo.
- The Hawkeyes went 9-8-2 in 2017 while posting a 5-5-1 home record
- Junior forward Devin Burns led the Hawkeye attack last season, scoring nine goals while dishing out five assists
- Burns was also clutch last season, scoring four game-winning goals
- A year ago, Iowa averaged 1.63 goals per game while allowing just 1.21 goals per game
- Junior goalkeeper Claire Graves started all 19 contests for Iowa last season, registering 75 saves
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT … IOWA STATE
- Mizzou holds an 11-6-1 series advantage over Iowa State. The Tigers were victorious in the teams' last meeting, besting the Cyclones 2-0 in August of 2017 in Columbia, Mo.
- Iowa State went 3-12-3 in 2017
- Junior Klasey Medelberg registered six points last season, scoring three goals to lead the Cyclones
- Sophomore Merin Mundt and sophomore Hannah Cade each had two assists to lead Iowa State last season
- The Cyclones return junior goalkeeper Antonia Reyes, who started 12 games last season, registering 59 saves
