Schweizer wins nod for second consecutive year, women’s team earns 18th honor since 1999
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Track & Field program continued its tradition of success in the classroom Thursday, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Academic Awards. Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) was named the NCAA D-I Indoor Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second year in-a-row, while the men's and women's programs both earned the All-Academic team honor.
The All-Academic team award is given to programs with at least a 3.00 cumulative team grade-point-average (GPA). The women's team, which turned in a 3.37 GPA this spring, has earned the All-Academic team nod every season dating back to 1999 (no release in 2002 or 2004). The men's team earned a 3.07 GPA in the spring semester, and has earned the honor for eight of the last 10 seasons.
In order to be named an All-Academic Individual, a student-athlete must have a 3.26 cumulative GPA and either be ranked nationally at the end of the indoor season, or have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships for the outdoor season.
Schweizer, who maintains a 3.41 GPA in Health Sciences, earned All-Academic Individual honors for the fourth consecutive season in addition to being named the top indoor scholar for the second straight season. Schweizer recently closed her collegiate season by winning her sixth NCAA title, the most among any student-athlete in Mizzou history. Schweizer also claimed 10 All-America honors, tied for the most in program history, and eight conference titles, the second-most all-time.
Also earning All-Academic Individual recognition was Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.) and Rauno Liitmae (Estonia). Cunningham recorded a 3.981 GPA in Biological Sciences, while Liitmae earned a 3.338 GPA in Global Public Affairs.
In June, 39 from Mizzou Track & Field were named to the Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll, while 12 were selected to the First-Year SEC Honor Roll in July.
