Vilches leads the world in the high jump, Santos has posted the 11th-best triple jump mark
COLUMBIA, Mo. – A pair of future Mizzou Track & Field student-athletes, Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) and Mirieli Santos (Mato Grosso, Brazil) are on display this week at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland. Vilches is competing in the high jump, while Santos is set to compete in the triple jump.
Vilches and Santos were each a part of Mizzou's fall signing class, and will join the Mizzou Track & Field team this fall. Live results for the meet will be available through the iaaf.org website, while a stream of the meet will be available through NBC Sports Gold for a fee.
Vilches, the current world leader for high jumpers under 20 years old at 2.26m (7-5), advanced through the qualification round on Thursday with a jump of 2.15m (7-0.5) and will compete in the finals on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. CT.
Santos is set to compete in the triple jump qualification round at 2 p.m. CT. If she were to advance to the finals (top-12 advance), the finals would take place at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday. Santos enters the competition with the fifth-best mark, 13.46m (44-2), which currently ranks as the 11th-best mark among triple jumpers under 20 years old.
