Tiger middle blocker honored for athletic, academic and community efforts
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Volleyball senior MB Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) was named a 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Munlyn was only one of 21 student-athletes across NCAA Volleyball to garner First-Team honors with this year's prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award. The accolade recognizes student-athletes who excel with their athletic ability while maintaining a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and serving as an active community member.
"We're very proud of Alyssa and all that she has accomplished so far at Mizzou," Mizzou Volleyball head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "For her to be selected to this elite group is a great honor and it's very well deserved. Alyssa will go down as one of our all-time great players, but will also leave her mark as one of our most caring and giving student-athletes. We can't say enough good things about her and her approach to the sport of volleyball, academics and life as a whole. I think it's also fitting and appropriate to recognize all that her parents have done to raise such a wonderful human being. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!"
On the volleyball court, Munlyn tallied her third consecutive AVCA All-America honor in 2017. She joined former Tigers Carly Kan and Lisa Henning as the only players in program history with three AVCA All-America awards.
Academically, Munlyn played a pivotal role into the Tigers' outstanding success in the classroom over the 2017-18 school year at the University of Missouri. Individually, the Tiger middle blocker produced a 3.74 grade-point average in the recent Spring 2018 semester and a cumulative 3.50 grade-point average over the 2017-18 academic year.
In the community, Munlyn has regularly volunteered her time with numerous Columbia, Missouri, organizations over her three-year career. Community service highlights have included serving as an instructor at the Mizzou Volleyball Black & Gold Youth Clinic, spending time with patients at the University of Missouri Children's Hospital and recently visiting Haiti with fellow Mizzou student-athletes for the "Soles4Souls" program to help create jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing.
