Schweizer earns bronze in 5000m, Jacobs resets school record in discus
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field's Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) each provided standout performances at the USA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Schweizer earned a bronze medal in the 5000m run with a third-place finish, while Jacobs reset her own school record in the discus following a fifth-place showing.
Making her professional debut after signing a contract with KIMbia Athletics, Schweizer clocked a time of 15:34.31 in a third-place finish in the 5000m run. Schweizer lead for parts of the final mile of the race, but ended up finishing behind Shelby Houlihan (Nike/Bowerman) and Rachel Schneider (Under Armor) for a bronze medal. The finish was an improvement on Schweizer's fourth-place finish in the 5000m run at the 2017 USATF Championships, where she set the school record by crossing the finish line at 15:18.69.
Jacobs reset the school record in the discus twice in her performance in Des Moines, as the two-time All-American recorded a throw of 59.59m (195-6) with her second throw, then 60.16m (197-4) with her final throw to place fifth in the event. Jacobs' final throw marked the first time in program history a discus thrower has eclipsed 60 meters, and surpassed her previous personal-best of 58.23m (191-0), which she set at the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary.
