Schweizer to run in the 5K in her hometown, Jacobs to throw the discus
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Two Mizzou Track & Field athletes will be back on the competition field this weekend at the USA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa), who recently signed a professional contract with KIMbia Athletics, will run in the 5000m run, while Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) is set to throw the discus.
The meet is set to take place at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, and will last from Thursday, June 21 – Sunday, June 24. NBC will provide live coverage for portions of the meet on Saturday and Sunday, with the remaining parts of the meet available online at NBC Sports Gold. Live results for the meet will be available through flashresults.com.
Schweizer will make her professional debut in the 5000m run on Sunday at 3:22 p.m. CT as she takes the Blue Oval against some of the best distance runners in the nation. Schweizer will be looking to improve on her fourth-place finish in the 5000m run at the 2017 USATF Championships where she reset her own school record by crossing the finish line at 15:18.69. She recently finished up her collegiate career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 6-9), where she collected her sixth national title and her ninth and 10th All-America honors. Schweizer began the NCAA meet by finishing third in the 10,000m run with a time of 32:14.94, then followed up that performance by winning the 5000m run with a time of 15:41.58.
With the NCAA title, Schweizer is just the second woman in NCAA history to win back-to-back NCAA titles in the indoor and outdoor 5000m runs in the same two-year span, following Arizona's Amy Skieresz in 1997-98. Schweizer's six national titles are the most among any athlete in Mizzou history, while her 10 All-America honors match Kearsten Peoples for the most in program history.
Jacobs, who is coming off her second All-America honor at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, will take the ring in the discus at 2:00 p.m. CT Thursday. This season, Jacobs won her second consecutive SEC Outdoor Discus title at the SEC Outdoor Championships (May 13) with a toss of 55.92m (183-5), then finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 9) with a throw of 55.47m (182-0). The fifth-place finish was her second consecutive fifth-place finish in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor meet, and is the highest discus finish in program history at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jacobs is also the only student-athlete in program history to record two All-America honors in the discus, and is the school record holder in the event after posting a mark of 58.23m (191-0) at the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary (May 26, 2017).
