Gereau joins the Tigers after two seasons with Illinois
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Volleyball has added transfer defensive specialist Annika Gereau (Oshkosh, Wisc.) to its 2018 roster, announced Tuesday (May 8) by head coach Wayne Kreklow. Gereau will join the Tigers this upcoming season as a junior after spending the 2016-17 campaigns at the University of Illinois.
"We're very excited about Annika joining our program," Coach Kreklow said. "She's a great student, tremendous athlete and highly-skilled volleyball player. Annika was an outstanding high school and club volleyball player and brings several years of Big 10 playing experience with her, which will be a tremendous value to our young team. She knows what it takes to be successful at a high level, both in the classroom and on the court."
Gereau appeared in a career-high 28 matches a season ago for the Fighting Illini, including 10 starts. Overall, she tallied 1.53 digs per set which ranked fifth-best on the team. After appearing in 13 matches as a freshman in 2016, Gereau earned an expanded role in 2017 and produced new single-season career-highs in sets played (98), assists (18), service aces (18) and digs (150).
As a valuable back row defender last season, she eclipsed 10-plus digs in a match five times, highlighted by a career-best 12 digs in Illinois' victory at Missouri State. Gereau was a dangerous server throughout the year as well, as her 18 total aces ranked tied for third on the team. She recorded multiple aces in a match seven times, including a career-high three aces against Big 10 Conference foe Ohio State.
Prior to her collegiate debut with Illinois, Gereau was a three-time MVP and four-year letter winner at Winneconne High School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She garnered Eastern Central All-Conference Team honors all four years at Winneconne, including consecutive First-Team accolades in her junior and senior campaigns.
In her 2015 senior high school season, Gereau was named the Eastern Central Conference Player of the Year. Her impressive final campaign also earned AVCA Under Armour Girls High School Third-Team All-America honors and Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association All-State Honorable-Mention recognition.
Gereau was a proven team leader throughout her youth playing career, achieving team captain honors twice with Winneconne and each season with her Wisconsin Volleyball Academy club team.
