Tigers will compete in San Juan from Aug. 31 – Sept. 2
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Beginning with Tuesday's (May 22) preview of the James Madison Invitational, Mizzou Volleyball will continue to breakdown its upcoming 2018 schedule in the coming weeks. Fresh off their second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance a year ago, the Tigers possess an exciting mix of talented returners and newcomers heading into their forthcoming campaign.
Mizzou's second nonconference tournament is slated from Aug. 31 – Sept. 2 at the Puerto Rico Invitational in San Juan. The Tigers will be joined by Xavier, Miami (Fla.) and Arizona State as they compete in one match per day over their weekend trip.
Xavier, a member of the Big East Conference, will be led by outside hitter Laura Grossman. The Musketeers senior led the team in kills and ranked second in points a season ago. Overall, Xavier will return three players who exceeded 130.0 points in 2017.
Miami posted a strong 2017 campaign in the Atlantic Coast Conference, leading to a bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Hurricanes recorded a first round victory over the College of Charleston before eventually falling to the NCAA runner-up Florida Gators in a second round matchup. Miami is one of nine total contests on Mizzou's 2018 schedule against an opponent who appeared in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
Arizona State will provide the Tigers another power five conference opponent. As a member of the Pac-12 Conference, the Aztecs have achieved 19 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances with their last occurring in 2015.
