Tiger Sophomore Was Just One Over Par on Saturday's Front Nine
STILLWATER, OK – University of Missouri sophomore golfer Jess Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) stands in 35th place individually after shooting a five-over par 77 Saturday in second-round action in the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf National Championship, held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Yuen, who shot an even par 72 in Friday's opening round, started with three pars Saturday on holes 10, 11 and 12 (she started on the back nine). After consecutive bogeys on 13 and 14, Yuen followed with pars on 15 and 16, but found trouble on the par four 17th, taking a seven on the hole. She rebounded nicely with a birdie on 18 to card a 40 on the inward nine.
Yuen settled in on her second nine, and shot a one-over 37 on the front, highlighted by a birdie on the par four second hole.
Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer was pleased overall with what she saw out of her sophomore standout. "Jess was real close to having a much different number in the end, she had some really good looks early on that she just couldn't convert," she said. "She struggled with her distance control a little bit on the greens today. She was putting good strokes on her putts but just couldn't dial in on the speed as well as she did yesterday. She missed three fairways today and the rough here is really long, thick and sticky so it makes it tough to get the ball close to the hole when you are coming out of the rough. This is a great golf course and tremendous test for all of the competitors. Jess will bounce back tomorrow after a good practice session on the greens," Priesmeyer said.
???????Yuen will play in Sunday's third round, hoping to advance to the final round on Monday in the 132-competitor field.
The championship format consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play, and then the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship.
???????Yuen finds herself two shots back of the unofficial cut line heading into Sunday.
