Kuyava-Deberg joins the Tigers after 2017 freshman campaign at Illinois
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Volleyball has added transfer outside hitter Kylie Kuyava-Deberg (Hudson, Iowa) to its 2018 roster, announced Monday (May 14) by head coach Wayne Kreklow. Kuyava-Deberg will join the Tigers this upcoming season as a true sophomore after spending 2017 at the University of Illinois.
"We're very excited that Kylie has chosen to join our program," Coach Kreklow said. "Like Tyanna Omazic and Jaden Newsome, Kylie is someone that we recruited quite heavily during her high school and club career. We were obviously disappointed when she originally chose Illinois, but we're delighted with her decision this time around! Kylie is a great person and teammate and isn't afraid of hard work. She's blessed with size and athleticism and has all the tools to be a great one. We anticipate Kylie immediately competing for a major role in our program and are really excited about our potential as a team this upcoming season!"
Kuyava-Deberg appeared in 11 total matches as a freshman last year with the Fighting Illini. As a valuable offensive weapon off the bench, she recorded multiple kills in a match five times. Kuyava-Deberg posted a career-high six kills on three separate occasions, including twice over the team's season-opening weekend.
Her most productive night in Big 10 Conference action came in Illinois' sweep at Rutgers, as she delivered four kills on .800 hitting with one dig and one total block.
Prior to her NCAA debut with the Fighting Illini, Kuyava-Deberg was a nationally heralded recruit for Hudson High School in Hudson, Iowa. In her 2016 senior campaign, PrepVolleyball.com rated her No. 15 overall on its Senior Aces list. Kuyava-Deberg went on to garner Iowa Girls' Athletic Coaches Association First-Team All-State, First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-District accolades in her final year at Hudson.
The imposing 6-foot-4 outside hitter initially broke out during her 2015 junior season, earning IGCA Second-Team All-State, First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-District recognition.
Kuyava-Deberg was a two-time MVP award winner for Hudson and registered over 1,000 kills across her standout four-year career.
