COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Tennis team won a pair of doubles matches and a singles matchup Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, but couldn't close out the rest as Alabama took a 4-2 victory.
For the second straight match, Mizzou (11-14, 0-11 SEC) took the first doubles match of the day. This time, it was at No. 3, when sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) teamed for a dominant 6-1 win to earn their team-leading 17th doubles victory of the year. The Tigers then took the doubles point for the first time in five matches when senior co-captain Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) and sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) won at No. 2, 6-3.
Alabama (14-13, 1-10) took a 2-1 lead with straight-sets singles wins at Nos. 1 and 2, then stretched the advantage with a three-set win at No. 4. Middlebrooks stemmed the tide, and continued her stellar season, by picking up her team-leading 20th singles win of the season, a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over the Crimson Tide's Jacqueline Pelletier.
With the first four singles matches complete, attention turned to the final two matches on the North side of the Green Tennis Center. Senior co-captain Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) won her first set, 6-4, and was on her way to a straight-sets win before Alabama's clinching win at No. 5 suspended her match.
UP NEXT
Mizzou hits the road for the rest of the season beginning next weekend. The Tigers are at No. 31 Tennessee on Thursday at 5 p.m. CT, then wrap up the regular season in Athens, Ga., with a tripleheader. The Tigers face No. 7 Georgia at 10 a.m. CT, then play a pair of neutral-site matches in Athens vs. Savannah State at 3 and 4:30 p.m.
