KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Going up against its 14th ranked opponent in its last 16 matches, the Mizzou Tennis team fought hard at No. 31 Tennessee before succumbing, 4-0, Thursday night at Barksdale Stadium.
The Tigers (11-15, 0-12 SEC) started the afternoon well in the opening doubles matches, securing 3-1 and 3-0 leads, respectively, at Nos. 2 and 3. Yet the Vols took the first match, 6-4, at No. 1, then made a 7-5 comeback at No. 2 to secure the doubles point before sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) could nab their 18th doubles win of the season at No. 3.
In singles, the top and bottom of the Tiger lineup was strong. Sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) took the first set at No. 1, 6-4, while freshman Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) did the same at No. 6. Unfortunately, Tennessee clinched the match with wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 before either could close a decision.
UP NEXT
Mizzou wraps up the regular season Saturday in Athens, Ga., with a tripleheader. The Tigers face No. 7 Georgia at 10 a.m. CT, then play a pair of neutral-site matches in Athens vs. Savannah State at 3 and 4:30 p.m.
