Miklus receives honor for the third time, Eierman Erneste for the second time
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Four Mizzou wrestlers – redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.), redshirt junior 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.), redshirt freshman 184-pounder Canten Marriott (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) and redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) – were named to the NWCA All-Academic team, announced by the organization Thursday. The honor is the third for Miklus, second for Eierman and Erneste, and first for Marriott.
Mizzou was one of 20 teams in the NCAA to have at least four representatives on the All-Academic team.
Eierman, a Communications major with a 3.051 GPA, earned All-America honors for the second straight season with a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds at the NCAA Championships. Eierman was named the MAC Wrestler of the Year after producing a record of 32-3 in 2017-18, as the Tiger sophomore won 24 matches with bonus points, including 16 by fall, the ninth-most in a single season in program history. Eierman, who won his second straight conference title this season, defeated 10 ranked wrestlers, including two-time National Champion Dean Heil (Oklahoma State) and eventual 2018 National Champion Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell).
Erneste, who maintains a 3.686 GPA while pursuing his Master's in Business Administration, produced a record of 25-4 this season while winning his second conference title and qualifying for his second NCAA Championships appearance. Erneste defeated nine ranked wrestlers on the season, recorded bonus points in 12 of his 25 wins, and ranked third on the team in falls with nine. Erneste graduated with a degree in Mathematics in December 2017.
Marriott, a Business Administration major with a 3.523 GPA, posted a record of 26-8 in his debut season as an attached wrestler for the Tigers. Marriott won 10 matches by bonus points on the season, and qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman.
Miklus, who is graduated with a degree in Psychology in the spring of 2017 and is currently pursuing his master's degree in positive coaching with a 3.66 GPA, earned All-America honors for the third time in his career, as the Tiger senior finished eighth at 197 pounds at the NCAA Championships. Coming off a knee injury that kept him out of the majority of the 2016-17 season, Miklus roared back onto the scene this season, posting a record of 24-6 while winning his first MAC title. Miklus recorded bonus points in 16 of his 24 victories, including seven technical falls, which ranks as the fifth most in one season in program history. In March, Miklus was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA, and will return to the mat for the Tigers in 2018-19.
