SCHWEIZER & WARD SET TO COMPETE IN COLLEGE STATION
- Mizzou Track & Field will conclude its 2018 indoor season with the NCAA Track & Field Indoor Championships, March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.
- The Tigers will have two student-athletes competing in three events at Gilliam Indoor Stadium, as senior Karissa Schweizer will run in the 5000m run (Friday - 8:25 p.m. CT) and the 3000m run (Saturday - 6:25 p.m. CT), while redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward will compete in the long jump (Friday - 5:30 p.m. CT).
- Mizzou fans will be able to catch all the action from College Station, as a live stream of the event will be available on ESPN3.com and through the WatchESPN app.
- Schweizer was named The Bowerman Pre-NCAA Indoor Watch List after a historic senior indoor campaign that has seen her set three top-five collegiate time, including a collegiate record in the 3000m run. The three-time NCAA National Champion began the season by resetting her own school record in the 5000m run at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2), as the Tiger senior rebounded from an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships two weeks prior to win the event with a time of 15:17.31. Schweizer then followed up her performance in the 5K with a school record performance in the mile run at the Columbia Challenge (Jan. 27), as Schweizer smashed the previous school record by more than seven seconds, clocking a time of 4:27.54. The Tiger senior was not finished, however, as she returned to New York City a week later to race in the 3000m run at the famed Millrose Games (Feb. 3), where she set the collegiate record with a time of 8:41.60. Schweizer enters the NCAA meet with the top-seeded times in the 3K and 5K.
- Schweizer continued her distance dominance at the 2018 SEC Indoor Championships, capturing her sixth and seventh conference titles, doing so in the 3000m run and distance medley relay. Schweizer set a conference meet record in the 3000m run, clocking a time of 9:00.56, while her 4:25.56 anchor leg mile split gave the Tigers the DMR title. The Tiger senior's seven career conference titles match Sabrina Dornhoefer for the most conference championships by a female in program history.
- Ward was named SEC Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 20 following a school record performance in the long jump at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16). The Tiger freshman posted a mark of 7.97m (26-1.75). The mark matches the best mark set in the SEC this season, and is tied-for-fifth-best in the NCAA this season. Ward was named to the All-Freshman team after a fifth place finish in the long jump at the SEC Indoor Championships, where he jumped 7.75m (25-5.25).
- At last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, Schweizer captured two All-America honors as the then-junior won her second national title in the indoor 5000m run and finished runner-up in the 3000m run. Schweizer's 18 points at the meet aided Mizzou to an eighth-place finish, matching its best-ever women's finish at the NCAA Indoor meet (1989).
ACCOLADES, AWARDS CONTINUE FOR SCHWEIZER
- The accolades and awards Mizzou senior Karissa Schweizer's have not slowed down at all in 2018, as she was named to The Bowerman Pre-NCAA Indoor Watch List, as announced by the USTFCCCA. The Bowerman is annually awarded to the nation's top male and female student-athlete in NCAA Track & Field. Schweizer was also named the SEC Runner of the Year and USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Women's Track Athlete of the Year.
- Schweizer continued her distance dominance at the 2018 SEC Indoor Championships, capturing her sixth and seventh conference titles in the 3000m run and distance medley relay. Schweizer set a conference meet record in the 3000m run, clocking a time of 9:00.56, while her 4:25.56 anchor leg split gave the Tigers the DMR title. The Tiger senior's seven career conference titles match Sabrina Dornhoefer for the most conference championships by a female in program history.
- The six-time All-American's 2018 indoor campaign has been a historic one, as she holds the top-time in the 3000m run and 5000m run entering the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships. Schweizer set the collegiate record in the 3000m run at the Millrose Games (Feb. 3), winning USTFCCCA Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week and the Southeastern Conference Women's Runner of the Week honors in the process. Schweizer was the top collegiate finisher in the race, as she crossed the finish line fourth at 8:41.60. Schweizer's time surpassed the previous collegiate record from 2009 by Colorado's Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (8:42.03), as well as the Mizzou school record mark of 9:06.39, which was set by Sabrina Dornhoefer in 1984. The mark is also the seventh-fastest time in the world this season.
- Schweizer now holds top-five all-time NCAA marks in the mile run, 3000m run and 5000m run, all set this season. She clocked a time of 4:27.54 in the mile run at the Columbia Challenge (Jan. 27), the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history, and a 15:17.31 in the 5000m run at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2, 2017), the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history. Schweizer also clocked a school record 2:44.12 in the 1000m run at the Arkansas Invitational (Jan. 12). All four marks ran this season are school record marks.
EIGHT FROM MIZZOU EARN ALL-SEC HONORS
- Mizzou garnered eight honors as the Southeastern Conference announced its SEC Indoor. Senior Karissa Schweizer earned the SEC Women's Runner of the Year following conference titles in the 3000m run and distance medley relay. This is second consecutive season she's been named the league's top female indoor runner.
- Joining Schweizer with All-SEC first team honors was redshirt senior Megan Cunningham, who captured the 5000m SEC title, as well as Schweizer's DMR teammates, junior Maya Cody, redshirt senior Valeska Halamicek and sophomore Karina Liz. Three Tigers, distance runner Austin Hindman, jumper standout Ja'Mari Ward and thrower Emily Stauffer also earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors as the top freshman finisher in their event.
- Mizzou's freshmen set themselves up for a successful future at SEC meets in the Black & Gold, as the Tigers' three All-SEC Freshman Team honors are tied for the second-most in the conference. Ward led the way, as he finished fifth in the long jump (7.75m/25-5.25), while Stauffer finished 11th in the weight throw (17.81m/58-5.25) and Hindman finished 16th in the 3000m run (8:21.48). Ward, the 2017 SEC Outdoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, set the school record and posted a NCAA Indoor-qualifying mark at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16), as he jumped 7.97m (26-1.75).
WARD NAMED SEC FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
- Mizzou redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward was named the Southeastern Conference Field Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Feb. 20. Ward, who won was named the 2017 SEC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, set the indoor long jump school record at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16).
- Ward finished first in the long jump at last week's home meet, as the Tiger freshman recorded a jump of 7.97m (26-1.75) to set the school record, which surpassed Yussuf Alli's 1984 mark of 7.91m (25-11.75). The mark puts Ward in position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as it currently matches the fourth-best jump in the NCAA this season (top-16 marks qualify). Ward's mark is also tied for the best mark in the SEC this season, as Florida's Grant Holloway recorded an identical mark at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 26.
- Among program records, Ward now holds the school record in the indoor long jump, the second-best mark in the outdoor long jump (8.13m/26-8.25), the sixth-best indoor triple jump mark (15.66m/51-4.5) and the eighth-best outdoor triple jump mark (15.44m/50-8).
- Ward redshirted the indoor season in 2017 before joining the Tigers for a stand-out outdoor season, as he captured the SEC long jump title as was named the conference's top freshman field athlete. Outside of Mizzou, Ward captured a Pan American Junior title in the long jump in July 2017, and won a junior national title in the long jump in 2016.
