Allen and Hendrickson both in individual top-10 after day one of play
TUCSON, Ariz. – Mizzou Women's Golf sits in fourth place after a day of action on the MountainView Golf Course. The Tigers held the lead for most of the day, but had a tough finish to Round One. Individually, both junior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) and junior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) had strong first days. Allen is currently tied for seventh (-1), using a five-birdie performance to propel her up the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Hendrickson owns a share of 10th after shooting an even-at-par 72 over the tournament's first 18 holes.
"It was great to see Emma under par today. She has been really close & she had five birdies which is an outstanding start to the event," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "Cayce was so consistent for us with her even-par round. She hit 16 greens & had a lot of birdie opportunities that just missed."
Further down the individual leaderboard was Jess Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.), who shot a 75 in her first round of action and currently sits tied for 30th overall. Yuen remains in the hunt, and showed glimpses today, firing three birdies during the round.
Senior Clara Young (North Brunswick, Scotland) and junior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) are both tied for 38th overall courtesy of the matching 76s they fired on day one. Young played excellent golf for most of the day, registering five birdies to tie Allen for the team lead in that category. Her only trouble came on hole number 12, where she fired a nine. Kim's round, meanwhile, was highlighted by her strong finish on the front nine, where she fired a birdie on six, two consecutive pars on seven and eight, and an eagle on nine.
Mizzou's two unattached individuals, redshirt junior Mackenzie Perez (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) and sophomore Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) shot rounds of 84 and 79, respectively.
Mizzou still has work to do in Rounds Two and Three, but the Tigers are still within striking distance, down just six strokes after Round One.
"We are in good position moving into Round 2," Priesmeyer said. "We have to eliminate the big numbers over the next two days & we can do that by staying patient & staying committed to our strategies & process. Sometimes we over think things on the course & we have to remember to be an athlete & just swing the club."
Mizzou will tee off Round Two tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT.
