The Tigers sit in eighth among a talented field
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Golf launched its spring campaign with a strong 36 holes on the opening day of the Florida State Match-Up in Tallahassee. Amongst a talented field that features seven ranked opponents, Mizzou sits in seventh overall through two rounds at 7-over par (295, 288 – 583) at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course. After carding a 7-over as a team in the first round, the Tigers responded with an impressive even-par round to finish out the day. The tournament has been shortened to two days due to impending weather on Sunday, therefore the final round of 18 will be played tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. CT.
The Tigers fought neck and neck against some of the nation's top ranked teams on Friday. After two rounds of play, they are ahead of No. 50 Kentucky and No. 30 Texas A&M and just three strokes back of No. 37 Notre Dame, who is currently in sixth.
"We had a great comeback in round two today," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "It was fun to watch Clara Young and Emma Allen get off to fast starts each round. We did a lot of really good things today with our gameplan and execution of shots. It was great to see Jess Yuen go low in the second round. She was certainly fighting her swing all day and just managed it better this afternoon. This is a very strong field and we are in good position to finish strong in the final tomorrow."
Senior Clara Young (North Berwick, Scotland) led the team this morning after posting a 3-under 69 in the opening round. She sat tied for fourth after tallying five birdies in the opening round alone. Her first round was her second lowest score of the 2017-2018 season, her lowest this season being 4-under 68. This was her sixth time breaking 70 in a collegiate level tournament. Young ended her day even-par and sitting tied for sixth after shooting a 72 in the second round. She tacked on an eagle on the 10th hole at the start of her second 18 holes.
Junior standout Emma Allen (Southampton, England) had a strong start after posting an eagle on hole 10 in her opening round. She ended her first round at 1-under 71 and was in ninth place going into the second round of 18. Allen went on to post a 2-under 70 and is also tied for sixth overall among 66 competitors. Allen is 3-under for the tournament.
The rest of the Tigers posted scores in the 70's on Friday. Sophomore Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) rallied to card a second round 1-under 71 and move up 13 spots on the leaderboard to 36th overall.
