Huskies were down to their final strike twice and rallied past the Tigers
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou Baseball dropped the first game of a doubleheader vs. Northeastern, 10-8, Saturday afternoon at City of Palms Park. Mizzou carried an 8-7 lead into the top of the ninth inning and retired the first two batters in the frame. However, Northeastern countered with a pair of two-out walks, followed by a single and a double, leading to three runs in the frame, despite the Huskies being down to their final strike twice.
Freshman RHP Ian Bedell (Davenport, Iowa) took the loss while Northeastern RHP Kyle Murphy earned the win. Mizzou falls to 4-2 while Northeastern improves to 3-2.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou put two men on in the bottom of the eighth inning and leadoff man Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) hit a fielder's choice to first base. Husky 1B Jake Farrell elected to try and gun the lead runner, but the shortstop could not hang on to the ball after an aggressive slide from freshman LF Cade Bormet (San Antonio, Texas). Sophomore SS Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) scored from second base on the play, giving Mizzou the lead.
Bedell then came on for the ninth and struck out the first two batters he faced, but a full-count walk followed by a four-pitch walk extended the game. Nine-hole hitter Mason Koppens singled through the left side to tie the game and leadoff man Charlie McConnell had the game-winning hit, a two-run double over Bormet's head in left field, one batter later.
