COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou hosted its final meet of the indoor season before postseason competition begins, as two school records were set Friday at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge. Redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) set the top program mark in the long jump, while junior Valeria Kostiuk (Kiev, Ukraine) matched the high jump school record.
In total, Mizzou posted 29 top-three finishes at the meet, including 11 first-place finishes. Mizzou especially dominated in the field events, as the Tigers recorded first place finishes in six of seven events it had entries in. In addition to the two school record marks, three other top-10 program marks were set on Friday, giving the Tigers five marks added to the top-10 lists.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Ward used his second jump to record a mark of 7.97m (26-1.75), surpassing Yussuf Alli's 1984 mark of 7.91m (25-11.75). The mark puts Ward in a position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as it currently ranks as the fourth-best jump in the NCAA this season (top-16 marks qualify). Among program records, Ward now holds the school record in the indoor long jump, the second-best mark in the outdoor long jump (8.13m/26-8.25), the sixth-best indoor triple jump mark (15.66m/51-4.5) and the eighth-best outdoor triple jump mark (15.44m/50-8).
In the high jump, Kostiuk matched Hanne Skei Andersen's 1993 mark of 1.83m (6-0) to finish first. Kostiuk, the 2017 NJCAA Indoor National Champion, needed just five jumps at the D-I collegiate level to reach Mizzou's school record. Her mark is on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA meet, as it currently matches the 14th-best jump in the NCAA this season. Junior Karissa Roman (Kewaukee, Ill.) finished just behind Kostiuk, palcing second with a jump of 1.75m (5-8.75).
Junior Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.), who already held the second-best 60m dash time in program history, improved her personal-best mark by running a 7.36 to finish first. Cody now sits just .05 seconds away from LaQuisha Jackson's 2015 time of 7.31.
In the shot put, Mizzou finished with the top-three marks in the event, including two top-10 program marks from redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) and redshirt freshman Emily Stauffer (Reinholds, Pa.). The pair had nearly identical marks, as Jacobs recorded the seventh-best program mark at 15.54m (51-0) to finish first, while Stauffer posted the eighth-best program mark at 15.53m (50-11.5) to finish second.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Brett Halter
"I thought it was a good day, and I think we are right where we want to be heading into championship season next weekend. We had some terrific breakthroughs, beginning with Ja'Mari Ward putting a big national mark up in the long jump. Valeria (Kostiuk) got back to where she's been with her high jump mark, which was really nice to see. She put together some real high-quality jumps at that 1.83 meter bar. And Karissa Roman is right there as well. If she puts a couple things together, I certainly think things could come together nicely for her next weekend. Maya's (Cody) performance in the 60 really shows she is in terrific shape. And, lastly, what we are doing in the throwing events impressed me. Gabi (Jacobs), Emily (Stauffer), and all are athletes competing in the shot put at the end of the meet really showed great integrity and got the job done. As a team, today's performance shows where the team is a whole, and we are all looking forward to getting into some really fun competition over the next couple weeks."
UP NEXT
Mizzou now transitions to postseason competition, beginning with the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held Feb. 24-25, in College Station, Texas. After, Mizzou will head to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will also be held in College Station two weeks later, March 9-10.
