Tigers Sign 22 Standouts as Part of a Highly-Regarded Group
COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Head Football Coach Barry Odom and his coaching staff officially announced today the program's 2019 recruiting class, as 22 standouts have signed to attend the University and play football at Mizzou. Wednesday marked the first day of the early signing period, which continues through Friday.
In the midst of preparations for the 2018 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, set for Dec. 31 in Memphis, Tenn. against Oklahoma State, Odom's staff has continued its late-season momentum by assembling a highly-regarded group that meets a lot of needs, according to Mizzou's third-year head coach.
"It's an exciting day, we're really pleased about this group," Odom said. "Going into every recruiting class, you want to identify the immediate needs you have, but also build the depth of each position on your roster, and I think our staff found guys that number one, really wanted to be at Mizzou, and number two, who fit what we're doing culturally to make sure they fit in the locker room. These are very competitive guys that have the skill set to win in this league, and we're very excited about them all – every one of the 22 guys we wanted from the jump when we started the evaluation process. Now the process turns to getting them on campus and putting them in the position of being their best. Each of them has different skill sets, but collectively, they have all shown to a person that they are very competitive, they love to play ball, and they're excited to be Missouri Tigers," he said.
As of late afternoon Wednesday, the class ranked 31st nationally, according to Rivals.com, a standing that's been surpassed at Mizzou only twice in the last 10 years (21st in 2010 and 27th in 2015).
Sixteen of the 22 names announced today hail from Southeastern Conference states, with the home state of Missouri leading the way with a class-high six signees (including five from St. Louis). Mizzou once again dipped into Texas to nab five highly-rated athletes, while getting two from Georgia, and one each from the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. Mizzou also continued its solid ties in the state of Michigan, as three athletes hailing from there are part of the 2019 class.
Coaches anticipate eight members of the class will enroll at Mizzou this January, allowing them to take part in 2019 spring camp, which begins in March and concludes with the annual Black & Gold Spring Game, set for Saturday, April 13 at Memorial Stadium.
In three seasons on the Mizzou sideline, Odom has improved the Tigers' win total each year, while earning bowl bids in each of the past two. Odom's 2018 team will carry an 8-4 record and a No. 23 (CFP)/No. 24 (Associated Pres) national ranking into the bowl game. A win in the Liberty Bowl would make this just the ninth team in program history to win nine games in a season.
Tickets for the 2018 AutoZone Liberty Bowl may be purchased at www.mutigers.com/tickets. Tickets may also be purchased by calling the MU Athletic Ticket Office (1-800-CAT-PAWS) or in person at the Mizzou Arena box office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
