LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling had another strong performance at one of college wrestling's premier tournaments, taking home second place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday. Mizzou had five of its 10 wrestlers earn podium finishes, highlighted by a pair of runner-up nods, while finishing with a team total 115.5 points. Only second-ranked Ohio State finished with more points. Mizzou edged nationally-ranked Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota, among others, on the weekend as it continues to establish itself as one of the nation's top programs.
Earning second-place finishes were Jaydin Eierman at 141 pounds and Daniel Lewis at 174 pounds. Both advanced to the finals at their respective weight classes in dominant fashion before each fell to the top-seeded wrestler in their respective weight classes. Both Eierman and Lewis wrestled to seed as they came in at No. 2 in their brackets. Both finished with 4-1 records on the weekend.
One of the highlights of the entire tournament was true freshman HWT Zach Elam. He earned a hard-fought third-place finish at heavyweight, doing so the hard way as he showed toughness and character throughout. After dropping his second bout of the weekend Friday, Elam rallied to win his next eight bouts, four earning bonus points for the team. He closed his tournament by downing Demetrius Thomas of Pitt, 3-1, in the third-place match.
At 133 pounds, John Erneste took fifth place and earned the tournament's most falls award, posting pins in his first three championship bracket bouts. He won the fifth-place match over Wyoming's Montorie Bridges, 10-4, Saturday.
Also earning a podium finish was 165-pounder Connor Flynn. Seeded sixth, Flynn lost to No. 2 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming, 11-3, to open action Saturday but rebounded for a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Joey Gunther of Illinois, 4-0, in the seventh-place bout.
